Remembering Gordon Greene

Gordon Charles Greene (Andres Castro Arms, Northside, Oxford Hall, 1968-75) passed away on March 27, 2006, at the age of 57. Gordon was the dearly beloved husband of Margie (Miller) Greene (Hoyt, Northside, 1970-75) and the loving father of Jennifer Greene of San Francisco and Jason Greene of San Leandro.

Gordon was a graduate of U.C. Berkeley, Class of 1977. He was Maintenance Co-coordinator for the Co-op from 1972-1980, a member of the Theatrical Stage Employees Union 1980-1987, the moving coordinator at U.C. Berkeley 1987-2003 and was active in the San Leandro community.

Gordon and Margie Greene, 1981

Gordon met Margie (USCA Accountant since 1988) while Gordon was Oxford Hall’s maintenance manager and Margie was Hoyt Hall’s. They were married for 30 years and shared everything (except their tools).

While still a student, Gordon started the USCA’s Central Maintenance program, created the maintenance accounting and time card systems we still use today, and was instrumental in getting co-op students involved in the decision-making process of co-op home renovations and improvements known as BAPs (Board Approved Projects).

Gordon with daughter Jennifer, 1997As a UC employee, Gordon always thought of the co-ops and was instrumental in getting the USCA free furniture. He procured hundreds upon hundreds of free dressers, desks, beds and chairs when the University retrofitted their dorms and was going to take all dorm furniture and kitchen equipment to the dump.

Gordon was especially proud of the maintenance managers he worked with and the student workers on his summer crews, many of whom he kept in touch with for years after they graduated. We truly value Gordon’s service to the Co-op and will miss him greatly.
